Shimla is not just a hill station — it is a living piece of history. Once the summer capital of British India, this mountain town still retains the charm of cedar forests, stone buildings and the colonial bustle of Mall Road. Every street has a story, every building a legacy. Shimla is the kind of place you visit once and spend a lifetime trying to describe.

A Brief History of Shimla

In 1819, British officer Charles Pratt Kennedy built the first house here on these pine-covered ridges. Within decades, Shimla grew into the nerve centre of British India. In 1864, it was officially declared the Summer Capital of the British Raj — and from here, policies that shaped an entire subcontinent were written.

After independence, Shimla's significance didn't diminish. In 1972, the Shimla Agreement between India and Pakistan was signed here — a landmark moment in South Asian diplomacy.

Famous Places to Visit

🛍️ Mall Road & The Ridge

The beating heart of Shimla — Mall Road is a pedestrian promenade lined with shops, cafes and colonial buildings. During the British era, Indians were actually banned from walking here. Today it is the most vibrant, inclusive stretch in the city. The Ridge, its open companion, offers panoramic views of the surrounding hills and is the venue for all major local festivals.

⛪ Christ Church

Built in 1857, this is the second oldest church in North India. Its neo-Gothic architecture, stunning stained-glass windows depicting Faith, Hope, Charity, Fortitude, Patience and Humility, and its landmark clock tower make it the most recognisable building in Shimla. The interior is serene and cool even in peak summer.

🏛️ Scandal Point

At the junction of Mall Road and The Ridge stands Scandal Point — Shimla's most famous landmark with its most colourful backstory. Legend has it that the Maharaja of Patiala eloped with a British Viceroy's daughter from this very spot. True or not, the name stuck — and today it is the most photographed meeting point in Shimla.

🐒 Jakhu Temple

Perched at 2,455 metres on the highest peak of Shimla, the Jakhu Hanuman Temple is ancient and atmospheric. You can trek up through pine and oak forests (about 2 km) or take the ropeway for sweeping aerial views of the city. At the summit, a 33-metre tall Hanuman statue dominates the skyline. Fair warning: the resident monkeys are bold and will steal anything they can reach.

🏔️ Kufri — Adventure Hub

Just 13 km from Shimla, Kufri is where adventure comes alive. In winter it transforms into a skiing destination; the rest of the year offers horse riding, Kufri Fun World rides and the Himalayan Wildlife Zoo — home to snow leopards, Himalayan bears and Tibetan wolves. The views from the Kufri hilltop on a clear day stretch all the way to the plains.
